Abstract

This article provides an overview of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and Queer+ (LGBTQ+) issues in theory, research, and practice related to mental health. First, the complexity of sexual orientation and gender identity constructs and definitions of LGBTQ+ identities are described. Second, a brief history of the conceptualizations of LGBTQ+ mental health is provided. Third, evidence of mental health disparities is summarized and current theory and research on minority stressors as contributors to mental health concerns in LGBTQ+ populations are described. Fourth, professional guidelines for psychological practice with LGBTQ+ populations are delineated. Finally, directions for future theory, research, and practice are offered.
