Abstract

This article provides an overview of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues in theory, research, and practice related to mental health. First, the complexity of sexual orientation and gender identity constructs and definitions of LGBT identities are described. Second, a brief history of the conceptualizations of LGBT mental health is provided. Third, evidence of mental health disparities and current theory and research on minority stressors as contributors to mental health concerns in LGBT populations are summarized. Fourth, professional guidelines for psychological practice with LGBT populations are described. Finally, directions for future theory, research, and practice are offered.
