Abstract

Key Points Meningococcemia occurs when the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis enters the bloodstream and causes sepsis. Meningococcemia is rare but has a high mortality rate. Risk factors for meningococcemia include age younger than 1 year, living in crowded conditions, and complement deficiencies. Vaccines do not prevent infection from all serogroups of N meningitidis but are an important tool to decrease the risk of invasive infection. Close contacts of patients with invasive meningococcal disease should receive chemoprophylaxis.
