Abstract

The Marao community in Biak Numfor Regency, Papua, faces severe challenges in managing marine ecosystems. The community's lack of knowledge about marine ecosystem management means that human activities in the sea that violate environmental ethics worsen conditions, threatening marine ecosystems and the quality of the coastal environment. This research examines the church's active role in caring for aquatic ecosystems in Marao village, Biak. A qualitative method with a case study approach was used to analyse the church's active role in protecting the marine environment. The results showed that community-based marine resource management involves active community participation in ecosystem protection. In Marao, the community applies the Sasi tradition to regulate the use of natural resources. This practice consists of prohibiting fishing or using destructive fishing gear for a certain period, allowing the marine ecosystem to recover and fish resources to be sustainable. The church plays an active role in introducing environmental ethics to the community, although it has not yet fully integrated the teachings in its programmes. The application of ethical-theological values influences the perception and responsibility of the Marao community in caring for the marine ecosystem, emphasising that nature is the work of God and thus a moral obligation and calling as believers in the God of man in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem. Keywords: active role of the church; marine ecosystem; marao biak communityAbstrakMasyarakat Marao di Kabupaten Biak Numfor, Papua yang menghadapi tantangan serius dalam mengelola ekosistem laut.
