Abstract

ABSTRACT This study presents a systematic analysis of the emergence of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta militia in Nigeria's Niger Delta. It examines the sociopolitical conditions that underpin armed conflict in the oil-rich region. The ongoing Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta insurgency is a complicated conflict with varied complex dimensions that cannot be explained merely in terms of greed and grievance binary. Thus, this study departs from earlier accounts with regard to the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta. By adopting a holistic perspective to the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta it is expected that the intricate connections between land dispossession, marginalization, deprivation, political repression, and insurgency would be laid bare. Apart from this, the local, national, and global dimensions of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta are also critically examined.
