Abstract

In 1957 David Campton coined the term ’Comedies of Menace’ as the subtitle of his one-act plays collectively called The Lunatic View. In 1958 Irving Wardle applied it to The Birthday Party. Although he subsequently wanted to withdraw the label,1 its aptness made it stick.
