Abstract

This article provides an overview on the development of memory in childhood and adolescence. The focus is on the development of episodic memory, which involves conscious awareness. Developmental trends in event memory are discussed first, followed by a description of important determinants of memory development such as basic memory capacities (eg, working memory), memory strategies, metacognitive knowledge, and domain-specific knowledge. Here, recent findings based on cross-sectional and longitudinal research are considered. A final section addresses future directions of memory development research, reflecting the recognition that memory development cannot be isolated from the development of the brain, and informing about major neuropsychological findings on memory development.
