Abstract

This article summarizes the most important findings on the development of memory in childhood and adolescence. It starts with a brief introduction into major historical trends and relevant models of memory. Evidence for developmental differences in implicit memory is presented next, followed by a rather detailed account on important determinants of verbal memory and their relative impact on developmental changes in memory performance during childhood and adolescence. It is shown that memory strategies, metacognitive knowledge, and domain-specific knowledge – all contribute to performance increases. Next, findings on the development of visuo-spatial memory are presented, followed by a brief discussion of recent evidence on relations between memory and brain development.
