Abstract

There is a growing need for ensuring continuity and sustainability in urban development. This calls for finding stable points of reference and rationales for such development. The article discusses eight examples of urban loci as places of spatial and temporal permanence in the structure of contemporary European cities that emerged in different historical periods, from antiquity to the present day. The result of the evolutionary analysis and review of the structure of objects and places is conclusions concerning the characteristic features of their functional and spatial organization.
