Abstract

The concept of membrane reactor (MR) is an integration of chemical engineering and the mechanism of membrane separation of products that not only make the process economical but also helps in shifting the reaction equilibrium to desirable reactions. The reactor can be classified on the basis of various types of membranes that are used. MR plays an important role by combining two steps of the operation into a one-step membrane filtration with the chemical reaction. It has proved its functionality in converting organic and inorganic contaminants. The membrane position and reactor configuration determine the nature and activities of the MR, and depending on the nature, MRs can be utilized for different biotechnological, environmental, pharmaceutical, and medical applications. This chapter deals with various types of MRs and applications of innovative technologies to scale up from fundamental research of integrated membrane reactor technology to large-scale reactor-assisted industries, such as those producing value-added compounds, or from the exploitation for wastewater treatment
