Abstract

On reading A Random Walk in Science (R L Weber (ed E Mendoza) 1973 Bristol: Institute of Physics), I found it very unwelcome to have my opinion of Humphrey Davy's work lowered by the quoted criticism (from Nature 1935) by Professor Andrade. Davy had published work on frictional melting of ice, with experimental detail sketchy by modern standards; Andrade argued the work to be impossible to execute, at least in 1799, on the basis of calculation from a generous estimate of 0.5 for the ice/ice coefficient of friction.
