Abstract

Meditation techniques had originated even before the advent of the formal religions. There are about 5000 different meditation techniques that have been practiced since ancient times, but less than a dozen have been widely studied. Thirteen techniques are described in detail here. A recent scientific review finds uncertainties in their practice, and the scientific studies are primarily characterized by poor methodological quality. Firm conclusions cannot be drawn about the health benefits that accrue. However, this research is in its infancy, and there are well-designed trials showing important clinical results. The overall complexity of the techniques and the apparent depth of yogic insights into the nature of consciousness present a wide range of opportunities for future studies.
