Abstract
This study analyzes the influence of contingent trade protective measures on agricultural trade between 2000 and 2016. We used a gravitational equation to evaluate the impact of antidumping (AD), countervailing (CV), and safeguard and special safeguard (SG+SSG) measures on worldwide bilateral imports. The findings indicate that antidumping measures exert a negative impact on imports, suggesting that their implementation leads to a reduction in trade between countries, potentially due to increased transaction costs. On the other hand, countervailing measures have a positive effect on trade as they are seen to play an important role in ensuring trade competition. The coefficient for safeguard measures was not statistically significant. Consequently, the results of this study provide valuable insights into the consequences of the adoption of trade defense measures, facilitating informed decision-making and strategic planning in trade policy.
