Abstract
Travel Medicine, as we know it today, started in Portugal during the late 1990’s. The recent wave of Portuguese citizens migrating to tropical countries gave a new impulse to this discipline. This Workshop on Travel Medicine was an excellent opportunity to invite representatives of Portuguese travel medicine clinics to discuss the problems of this practice, and the right moment to launch the Portuguese Society of Travel Medicine. This paper briefly describes the content of the workshop, where the experience of some European countries and an overview of the Portuguese practice of Travel Medicine were presented and discussed. The principles and objectives of the Portuguese Society of Travel Medicine are also described.
