Abstract

This exposition concerns itself with the application of the silhouette principle to many contours in the mediastinum of the adult chest. Systematic study of these lines and profiles can be very rewarding. Minor alterations are sometimes clues to significant abnormalities both within the chest and elsewhere. A carefully directed inspection of good quality films may result in the impression of “negative chest.” Such a statement is not an expression of failure to recognize disease but rather a defendable position that no significant abnormality exists.
