Abstract
The mechanisms of abrasive and erosive wear by hard particles are reviewed. Two classes of mechanism can be identified, dominated either by plastic deformation or by brittle fracture. The dominant mechanism depends not only on the material subjected to wear and the nature of the particles, but also in many cases on the conditions under which the particles move against the surface. Theoretical models for these mechanisms, although capable of predicting several features of the wear process, are still unable to treat quantitatively some aspects and indeed some mechanisms of material removal.
