Abstract
This paper presents relocations and mechanism solutions for nine earthquakes that occurred in Albania, China, Mongolia, and along the Burma–India border during 1967 to 1970. Normal faulting was obtained for one Albanian earthquake. Four of the nine earthquakes occurred in China. The mechanism solutions of these earthquakes are characterized either by large components of thrust or strike-slip faulting. This result together with the results obtained previously from mechanism studies of Chinese earthquakes indicate that one predominant type of mechanism cannot be associated with Chinese earthquakes. Thrust faulting mechanisms were obtained for one of each of the earthquakes in Mongolia and Afghanistan. These mechanisms are similar to mechanism solutions of earthquakes in Mongolia and Afghanistan reported previously. The Mechanism solution for one shallow earthquake along the Burma–India border indicates a large component of thrust faulting. The inferred direction of thrusting is consistent with the direction of thrusting deduced from geological studies of this region. A steeply dipping axis of tension was inferred for intermediate depth earthquakes along the Burma–India border, however the dip direction of the axis of tension is quite different than the dip of the seismic zone in this region.
