Abstract

The kinetic features of absorption of O 2 and of degradation of the polymer have been investigated during oxidation of cis-1,4-polyisoprene films initiated by azodi-isobutyronitrile at 353 K. Oxidation of the polymer takes place by a chain mechanism with bimolecular termination of the chains. Degradation takes place as a result of transformation of peroxide radicals: 2PO 2→2PO ● + O, PO ● → decay (rapid). The rapid decay of PO ● stems from their thermal instability on account of the presence of the β-peroxide group.
