Abstract

Investigations expanded considerably in the first years of Soviet power in connection with the creation of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, which included the Institute of Technical Mechanics created in 1919 (after 1929 the Institute of Structural Mechanics and since 1959 the Institute of Mechanics). The main achievements in the prewar period are associated with the names of D. A. Grave, A. N. Dinnik, N. A. Kil'chevskii, A, D. Kovalenko, G. N. Savin, I. Ya. Shtaerman, and other scientists. In the first postwar years substantial results were obtained in the works of A. N. Dinnik, M. A. Lavrent'ev, A. Yu. Ishlinskii, N. A. Kil'chevskii, A. D. Kovalenko, G. N. Savin, V. M. Maizel', M. Ya. Leonov, I. Ya. Shtaerman, D. V. Vainberg, P. M. Varvak, and other scientists.
