Abstract
The freeze-drying method was used to synthesize biological scaffold. The properties of the as-prepared scaffolds were investigated by various techniques. Results showed that the magnesium (Mg) and strontium (Sr) co-doped bioactive glass/chitosan (MSBG/CS) composite scaffolds exhibited a three-dimensional honeycombed porous structure. With the increase in the added content of MSBG powders, the porosity, average pore size, swelling, and degradation rate of composite scaffolds decreased gradually. When the mass ratio of MSBG to CS was 2:4, compressive modulus of composite scaffold reached the maximum value of 1.12±0.019 MPa. It could be attributed to the hydrogen bond between the negatively charged silicon hydroxyl (Si–OH) in MSBG and positively charged amino group (–NH2) in CS molecular chain. In vitro experiment indicates that MSBG could significantly improve the generation capacity of hydroxyapatite in composite scaffold. Thus, the as-formed composite scaffold with remarkable performance acts as a promising candidate for bone tissues engineering.
