Abstract

1. With a decrease in the thickness of single and polycrystalline tin films strengthening of them is observed, which is caused by the influence of both external and internal (grain boundaries) interfaces, and grain boundaries make the predominant contribution. 2. The anomaly of the temperature relationships of the strength characteristics of polycrystalline tin films may be related both to the conditions of production of them and to changes occurring in the specimen during deformation. 3. In the general case the stress relaxation process in films is described by a logarithmic equation. Plastic deformation occurs by dislocation mechanisms. 4. In the investigated tin films the mechanism controlling the deformation process in the 77–300 K temperature range, as in large specimens, is the mechanism of intersection of mobile dislocations with dislocations of the background, that is, hardening of the tin films may be explained only by the influence of the external surfaces and the grain boundaries.
