Abstract

The hardness and elastic modulus of alkoxide-derived coatings on sapphire were examined using an ultramicrohardness tester. This tester allowed the properties of the coating to be determined without interference from the substrate. The interiors of the coatings were found to be softer than the surface. After firing, the hardness of the coatings at the surface was equivalent to the hardness of bulk fused silica. The properties of the coatings - and by implication their structure - were also found to be sensitive to thickness. A model of the structure of sol-gel coatings is proposed.
