Abstract

Alloys based on FeAl containing various amounts of ZrB2 have been prepared by rapid solidification and the mechanical properties of these materials related to the distribution of the dispersoid additions. Following rapid solidification the ZrB2 is present in a cellular configuration which leads to considerable strengthening. The composite material obtained consists of strong cell walls which limit deformation to one small region at a time, leading to a redistribution of applied stresses on mechanical testing which can result in improved ductilities.
