Abstract

1. A study was made of the preparation of Al2O3-Si3N4 oxide-nitride materials by the method of pressing and subsequent sintering in a nitrogen atmosphere. The silica present, apparently in the form of thin surface films on the silicon nitride particles, plays an important part in the process by reacting with the alumina, with the formation of mullite, which activates sintering. 2. A study was made of the strength characteristics of Al2O3-Si3N4 alloys at 20 and 1000°C. The strength of the alloys falls with increase in Al2O3 content.
