Abstract
ABSTRACT General techniques for designing the bottomhole assembly (BHA) for a medium radius horizontal well are reviewed with emphasis on achieving an integrated drilling system by optimizing bottomhole assembly performance via the proper selection of BHA components. Systems analysis includes detailed mechanical modeling of the bottomhole assembly with concentration on minimizing torque and drag. Other design considerations include stress analysis of a reverse tapered drillstring with emphasis placed on design considerations to ensure the integrity of the entire drillstring. A case history will be discussed for a typical medium radius horizontal well.
