Abstract

A Forged Trapezoidal Ramshorn Hook is an important machine element in which two curved saddles are mounted on a single shank for lifting load. Ramshorn hooks with trapezoidal cross sections are widely used in grabbing and lifting heavy mechanical components. The twin hook shape of the forged Ramshorn hook benefits from the use of smaller saddles as compared to simple crane hooks for the same load-holding capacity. This analysis has been performed on a forged Ramshorn hook having a trapezoidal cross section to study the behaviour under different grades of steel and to determine the proof load under each case. The effect of increased load on deformations and equivalent stresses has also been analyzed. A forged Ramshorn Hook of 40-ton capacity has been selected for the analysis and dimensions have been selected as per Indian standards. The computer-aided model of the Trapezoidal Ramshorn hook is prepared in Solid Works as per Indian Standard 1875 (1992) codes. The computer-aided design of this model has been imported to ANSYS Workbench to find the maximum Von Mises stress and deformations. The effect of increased load on stresses and deformations is analysed and all variations plots have been made. An effort has been made to find the proof load in different grades.
