Abstract
Specification of control valve performance is increasingly important in the process industries. In many process plants, dead band of significantly less than 1% is desired for certain control loops. Defining and measuring dead band approaching 0.1% presents new challenges for control valve vendors and users. This paper clarifies the existing terminology and illustrates (with laboratory data) phenomena that become significant at small amplitude, but can be missed by bench testing.
