Abstract

This self-teaching guide about elementary demographic measures a 4th edition is designed to familiarize the graduate undergraduate and even advanced high school student with most measures of mortality and fertility that are likely to be encountered in an introductory course on population issues. It may also be used as an introductory text in courses that concentrate on demographic methods. A 3rd use is in social science courses other than population. Most instructors will find that they require a maximum of 3 hours of class time to review the exercises with students and to clarify any points that are confusing. Each chapter explains elementary principles of demographic measurement and each has the following parts: definitions of measures and examples of their usual values; exercises and questions for the student that emphasize interpretation rather than computation; and references to other sources that use the measures in interesting or important ways. It is possible to measure the incidence of an event e.g. death in many ways. The 1st chapter discusses rates of various types and ratios percentages and probabilities using the measurement of mortality as an illustration. The 2nd chapter devoted to mortality begins with measures of mortality for historical reasons. Focus in the chapter is on the following: crude death rate (CDR); age specific death rates; the effect of age composition on the crude death rate; the infant mortality rate; the life table; and the application of the life table to mortality analysis. The volumes 3rd chapter deals with fertility natural increase and reproduction rates. Attention is then directed to the following: special problems in measuring fertility; the crude birthrate; the crude rate of natural increase; the general fertility rate; age specific fertility rates; standardized birthrates; gross and net reproduction rates; the mean length of a generation; census measures of fertility; cohort fertility measures; and analysis of birth intervals.
