Abstract

The diagnosis of chronic rhinosinusitis requires a combination of subjective patient symptoms and corroborative objective evidence of disease on sinonasal endoscopy or CT imaging. An attempt to measure disease severity quantifies both subjective and objective disease criteria. Subjective symptoms are documented using patient-reported outcome measures in the form of generic quality of life assessments and disease-specific symptom questionnaires. Evaluations of sinonasal endoscopy and CT imaging require scoring systems to reliably document objective disease severity. Ultimately, instruments that accurately estimate subjective and objective disease severity are essential in order to longitudinally evaluate outcomes after rhinologic treatment.
