Abstract

Using the internal beam of DESY inelastic electron-proton cross-sections were measured at various angles between 32.3° and 75° for the scattered electron, and with momentum transfers of about 20, 40 and 60 fm−2 to the first\((\pi {\mathcal{N}})\) resonance. The experimental set-up was nearly the same as used for earlier measurements on elastic e-p, and e-d scattering. The analysis of the data at the first resonance shows agreement with dispersion-theoretic calculations. In the region of the second and third resonance the cross-sections do not follow the threshold behavior but show a surprising dependence on ||, the 3-momentum transfer to the proton.
