Abstract

This study was on the fluctuations of ultrasonic characteristics caused by activities in a living cell which were determined by the phase detection method. Sample and reference ultrasonic beams were emitted from arched interdigital transducers (IDT) on a piezoelectric substrate (PZT), and the phase difference between the two beams was detected. Nitella, a tubular plant cell which shows an excitation phenomenon, was placed in the sample beam and showed small phase fluctuation and spike-like ultrasonic phase changes.
