Abstract

1. 1. The isolation of UDP-glucose, UDP-glucuronic acid, and UDP- N-acetylglucosamine by chromatography on paper is described and the rates of their synthesis in some tissues of the rat, guinea-pig, chicken, and frog were determined after [ i - 14C] glucose administration. 2. 2. About a fivefold higher rate of UDP-glucose synthesis was established in the liver of homoiothermic animals compared to that of poikilothermic animals. 3. 3. In the liver and kidney of the rat and guinea-pig the relative rates of UDP-sugar synthesis were as follows: UDP-glucose > UDP-glucuronic acid > UDP- N-acetylglucosamine, while in the small intestine the synthesis of UDP- N-acetylglucosamine was faster than that of UDP-glucuronic acid. 4. 4. A higher rate of UDP-sugar synthesis was observed in rat liver and small intestine compared to that of the same tissues of the guinea-pig.
