Abstract

The passive neutron dose equivalent meter for routine monitoring of the natural radiation background makes use of ECE polycarbonate detectors in contact with (n,α) radiators containing enriched and natural boron in the center of a 30 cm PE sphere. Thermoluminescent detectors can be combined with the track etch detectors either in the center or in an albedo dosemeter at the surface of the sphere. The paper describes the dosemeter design, the evaluation technique and the dosimeteric properties of the new dosemeter having a dose range of 1 μSv to 1 mSv for the track detectors and 0.1 mSv to 10 Sv for TLDs. Results of long-term neutron monitoring are given for the natural neutron background in different heights above sea level and neutron monitoring at nuclear facilities and accelerators.
