Abstract
The problem of obtaining objective measurements of muscle tone is reviewed. An apparatus is descrived that defines the mechanical characteristics of normal and rigid muscle during sinusoidal passive stretch at varying frequencies. Measurement of the work done in moving the elbow joint passively through a sinusoidal displacement of 13.7° at 2 c/sec has been shown to provide a clinically useful measurement of muscle tone in patients with the rigidity of Parkinsonism.
