Abstract

Various methods for the extraction of electric fields from incoherent scatter radar observations are discussed. The random errors in electric field determinations are derived and it is shown that under typical conditions observatories such as EISCAT should measure electric fields with an r.m.s. error of about 1 mv/m with one minute integration time. Some preliminary EISCAT results are shown and compared with other observations.
