Abstract

This chapter focuses on measures and measurement in intercultural (ICC) and cross-cultural communication (CC). Intercultural communication is the study of communication that takes place between unlike individuals. Cross-cultural communication is studying/comparing the same phenomena in different cultures. Numerous measures have been developed in communication to assess feelings of anxiety and communication apprehension. Competence within ICC and CC contexts is the ability to effectively interact interpersonally with individuals from different cultures. The process of cultural adaptation is of paramount concern for researchers, policy makers, communities, nations, and individuals. A growing area of research is comparing behaviors across cultures and within different communication contexts, falling largely within the discipline of cross-cultural communication research. G. Hofstede’s dimensions of culture have had a profound influence on communication, particularly ICC and CC environments. ICC and CC are both disciplines with vast opportunities for scholary and practical development and inquiry.
