Abstract

This article is devoted to the representation of the concept “patriotism” by artistic expressive means the novel “War and Peace” by L.N. Tolstoy. To achieve this goal, the most frequent means of expression in the novel were analyzed, such as epithet, metaphor, phraseology, comparison, etc. It was found that context is required to represent patriotism through epithets. The use of metaphors allows the author to verbally express the content of the concept “patriotism” in the novel. One of the main means of representing the concept “patriotism” in the novel “War and Peace” is phraseological units. Comparisons do not openly express the feeling of patriotism, however, they reveal new properties in the object of comparison for their figurative representation, for which context is also necessary. As a result, we can say that the means of expression in the novel “War and Peace” represent the concept “patriotism”, reveal its national peculiarities, show the heroism and courage of the Russian people.
