Abstract
We present a mean field theory for RVB states on a square lattice at and near half-filling, including particle-particle and particle-hole correlations. At half-filling, local SU(2) invariance allows a wavefunction to be expressed variously in fermion operators, which leads to degeneracies in the mean field theory. Away from half-filling the invariance is absent and the lowest energy RVB state is a d-wave superconductor.
