Abstract

Until the second half of the 19th century there was not an agricultural credit organization founded by the Ottoman Empire which should meet the credit needs of farmers Agriculturists were forced to lend some money from loan sharks at high interest rates Under the Governorship of Niche Midhat Pasha to offer farmers a helping hand the first attempt for establishing a credit organization was made. In Sehirkoy in 1863 (Pirot), the first Hometown Fund was established. After successful results were achieved by this fund it was widespread throughout the whole Ottoman Empire from the 1867s. this fund was financed by give and take theory which also enforced the sense of social assistance and solidarity. The Government Funds Lesbos, on the Island Lesvos was the first attempt in the field of agricultural credit during the Ottoman Empire Lesbos also formed the basis of the Bank. Although the non-Muslim population on the island firstly refused the idea, they later accepted the foundation of the bank. Crates of olives grown on the island and bonito capital income have been created.
