Abstract

This paper proposes an efficient maximum power point tracking method by using Vienna rectifier and hysteresis current controller for wind energy conversion system. It uses a permanent magnet synchronous generator without gear so as to increase the efficiency and reduce the cost of the system. From cut in speed to rated speed the maximum power point tracking is achieved by controlling the generator speed using optimal tip speed ratio and from rated speed to cut out speed a pitch angle controller is provided to make the power constant without affecting stability. By using MPPT the turbine is operated with maximum power coefficient and hence at maximum power output. The controller also ensures the unity power factor operation of generator. The wind turbine and generator, converter and controller are modeled using MATLAB simulink and performance is verified for maximum power point tracking and power factor correction.
