Abstract

A modification of the square root method of matrix inversion has been recently advocated. The present paper shows the conditions under which the original method, or the proposed modification, is preferred by comparing the round off error of the two methods when calculations are to be made to a fixed number of decimals with a desk calculator. The paper recommends the discontinuance of the use of incomplete numbers in reporting results where calculations on approximate numbers are made to a fixed decimal position.
