Abstract
The dispersion of pellets fired from a shot gun has been discussed and a semi-empirical mathematical model has been built up to estimate quantitatively the contribution of various factors responsible for dispersion. It has been shown that a slight difference in muzzle velocity ( ν 0 ), angle of projection (α) or co-efficient of resistance (μ) results in dispersion of the pellets. All other factors responsible for dispersion as reported in literature contribute to the variation of ν 0 , μ and δα (variation of α due to vibration and jump of the barrel). The mathematical relations derived provide an understanding of the phenomena of dispersion of pellets under different conditions.
