Abstract
21–23 May 1990Synopsis of a Conference sponsored by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, Bethesda, MD, USAThis Conference was sponsored by NICHD to facilitate progress in relating basic advances in immunology, molecular biology of the MHC (major histocompatibility complex) and cytokine biology to reproductive events. Maternal mechanisms that prevent 'rejection' of the foetus as a foreign graft are not yet completely understood. Indeed, products of the maternal immune system may actually facilitate the growth and healthy development of the foetus. The goal of NICHD was to promote examination and integration of the recent proliferation of basic data with respect to the role of rejection and facilitation in infertility and both early and late pregnancy pathology.NICHD invited 5 scientists to attend a planning meeting in Bethesda, Maryland, in December, 1989.
