Abstract

The work highlights the utility of biopolymer blend as an effective corrosion inhibitor and proves its ability to improve the coating characteristics of epoxy resin on steel during acid corrosion. Biopolymer blend of starch and pectin was prepared and characterized by viscosity measurements and spectral studies. Initially conditions were optimized to get maximum inhibition efficiency of biopolymer blend for the acid corrosion control of steel. Electrochemical techniques such as potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were adopted for the corrosion rate measurements. Later, same techniques were employed to study the corrosion rate of the epoxy resin coated steel before and after the addition of environmentally benign biopolymer blend. Detailed investigation of surface morphology of epoxy coated steel was carried out using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersion X-ray (EDX) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) techniques.
