Abstract

This study provides a comparison of the mate selection values of a society in which self-selection occurs (USA) and a society in which self-selection is emerging as the preferred choice (Malaysian). The results of a survey, patterned after Hill and Christensen’s work, showed love to be the most important value for both cultures. A number of attitudinal differences in mate selection values were found between USA men and women which were not present among the Malaysians. The study suggests that these differences may be due to the USA male’s continued devaluation of mate selection values.
