Abstract

Although nurse practitioner (NP) residency and fellowship programs constitute a new phenomenon in the area of postgraduate nurse education training, the concept of postgraduate training for NPs has been evolving for over a decade. Since the inception of the first program begun by Margaret Flinter at Community Health Center in 2007, over 100 programs in a variety of specialty and primary care settings have been developed and continue to thrive.1 In addition, the establishment of a nationally recognized accreditation body for postgraduate NP education, the national Nurse Practitioner Residency and Fellowship Training Consortium, continues to encourage the expansion of existing programs and the development of new programs (https://www.nppostgradtraining.com/about-us/).
