Abstract
I~VESTIOATIO~ of the mechanism of the thermal degradation of polymers must include a study of the kinetics of the process and determination of the composition of the degradation products. There axe now several publications on this question. The monographs of [1, 2] and a large number of articles contain much factual material on the kinetics of the process and the mechanism of macromolecular breakdown. There are various methods in use for studying the kinetics of the process and the composition of the degradation products. These include determining the rate of degradation, either from the weight loss of the specimen measured on a vacuum balance [3-5], or from the change in the partial pressure of the appropriate component, using special pressure gauges [6, 7]. Both chemical, chromatographic and mass spectrometry methods can be used to study the actual product of degradation. Since the mass spectrometer can be used as a highly sensitive partial-pressure gauge, it can also be used to study the kinetics of degradation and determine the composition of the volatile degradation products.
