Abstract
Canalis et al. in 19781 defined the term mucocele as “a chronic, expansile, cyst-like lesion of the paranasal sinuses which contains sterile, mucoid secretions and is limited by the mucosa of the affected cavity.” The lesions are lined by pseudostratified low columnar epithelium containing goblet cells. Typically they expand slowly and concentrically and may take many years before they become symptomatic. As they expand, bony erosion occurs, and they can extend outside of their sinus of origin. The location and extent of bony erosion thus determines the clinical findings associated with the mucocele.
