Abstract
Introduction Environmental science strives to understand the formation, disposition, transport, and transformation of pollutants in the environment. Explorations of reaction chemical kinetics and mechanisms, chemical and biological transformations of anthropogenic contaminants, and the transport of contaminants in atmospheric and aquatic systems represent the nature of research conducted. The performance of this research depends on the development and application of analytical techniques and methods. In turn, the existence of significant environmental chemical issues provides an impetus for analytical chemistry research that allows environmental scientists to pose better and deeper research questions. The synergism between the environmental scientist and the analytical chemist advances both fields of scientific endeavor and has facilitated the evolution of the analytical chemistry of environmentally significant compounds into a distinct discipline.
