Abstract

Mass spectral and appearance potential measurements on vapors from NaSnF 3 and KSnF 3 over the temperature range 725–895°K indicate the presence of SnF 2, NaSnF 3, Na 2SnF 4, NaF, NaSn 2F 5 and possibly (NaSnF 3) 2 as well as SnF 2, KSnF 3 and KF, in their approximate relative order of abundance. From ion current vs. temperature data, second law heats for the reactions of SnF 2 and NaF (or KF) to form NaSnF 3, Na 2SnF 4, and Na 2Sn,F 5 (or KSnF 3) were derived. By using values of the activities of NaF and KF, obtained from an analogy with condensed phase data for similar mixtures, free energies were calculated for these reactions. Independent enthalpies of reaction were then obtained by use of estimated entropy data.
